I'm excited to be returning to WUMB's SAMW Week One in 2027. I had a great time there this summer (2026), enjoying connecting with the students in my theory and singing classes, as well as the general camaraderie with campers and fellow instructors, the jams, concerts, and swimming in beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee. This time I'll be teaching two ukulele classes. I'll eventually have descriptions of the classes on the SAMW camp website, but for now here's a brief look at what I'll be teaching.
My advanced beginner class, tentatively titled "Making Music on the Ukulele," is for players who are already comfortable with basic chords in a few keys (C, G, D) and can play a number of songs fluidly. We'll look at some simple fingerpicking patterns, and strum modifications, and will present tips on moving more easily between chords. We'll look at how we can simplify our playing to give plenty of space for our vocals to be clearly heard while fully supporting them at the same time.
Our advanced class, "Exploring the Versatility of the Ukulele," takes our playing beyond what is normally thought of as ukulele style playing. It's geared toward players who are already comfortable playing bar chords, and at ease playing more complicated chord progressions in the keys of C, G, D, A, and F. We'll look at ways to apply techniques from open guitar tunings—with no re-tuning necessary! We'll expand on basic fingerpicking patterns, and apply a combination of right-hand guitar techniques to the ukulele. Experienced guitar/other fretted instrument players are welcome to this advanced class, where you can explore the potentials of the ukulele with us.
